Old posts/new posts function

Hello,

For some reason my old posts/new posts icons are not doing their job. I am using 3.8.1 default. I have been tinkering around, but have no idea what I may have done to turn that function off.

UPDATE:

I had to hit "Mark all Forums Read" and now it is working again. Strange.
