Adding users to custom usergroups on activation?

Is it possible to have new users automatically added to custom usergroups once they activate their account?

My forum is going to be split into two distinct subject areas and I want all new members to have access to all areas once they register but be able to opt out of either subject area if they so choose.

The best way I thought of doing that would be to create two custom usergroups each with access to their own subject area forums and have new members added to both usergroups on joining. Then they can just leave the group of either subject area if they want to and will no longer see that areas forums. However, I haven't found a way of adding new users to the two custom usergroups. Is there a way? or is there another way of going about this?

That's not the same thing, that mod lets us choose the default usergroup when a member registers, what I want is to be able to add new users to two custom usergroups (as well as the default 'Registered members' usergroup) once they have been validated. That mod also seems to have a problem as it messes up the account validation process.

I take it there is no way to do what I want at present. I'll have a look myself and see if I can see how to do this as I am a quite capable coder, though I am totally new to Vbulletin so if someone could point me in the right direction (which files I should be looking at?, etc.) then that would be appreciated.

Maybe this one will help you more... https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=82993

Thank you, that looks much more promising!

Looking at that mod I'm quite sure I can customize it to meet my needs.
