Moving servers

Going to be moving servers. Right now I am on 3.6.7 but have downloaded and renewed my license and have 3.7.5 I believe it is.

Right now I am on one server, but I am going to be moving to another. I exported my SQL database already. Can I install vbulletin somehow and put the database in place so that when my DNS change happens its fluid and no down time is experienced?

By all means you can install the same information on both severs, the only thing you may lose is the last few hours before the switch unless you close the board.

My suggestion is to close the board on the old host. And add a message saying something like: We are currently moving to our new server. If you see this message, it means that you are still connecting to the old server. Please allow up to 72 hours for the new DNS entries to propagate.

If you do not do this, you will have data discrepancies between the two servers.

And redirect the old server to the 'Temporary URL' (most control panels wil also create a link to your site based on the IP).

Thanks guys - so there is no issue with licensing in terms of vbulletin not letting me install on the new server while another server is active? It's been a while since I did a new vbulletin implementation, I don't remember how it all works.

Also, I am going to have to create new SQL databases I think. I exported the current one to an SQL file, but the new host will not have my database created. Is there a clever way to find out all my details, or should I just create a new database with the same name and whatever credentials I want?

See the manual: Moving Servers

Sorry to bump this however...

I'm going to be moving soon, and will download db via SSH and upload same way as well as forum files, however..the temporary URL ?

Can you explain this a little - the new ip address is shared on the new server with another site, so how do I can the temp url (plesk).

Thanks !

You should ask your host.
