Nothing will protect against ddos, you can only have more bandwidth than the attackers do.

Try to shut off your http service for a while and then turn it back on after a few hours to see if they've quit.

Is it a linux box?
If so - google: csf + lfd |
Actually as you already added a .htaccess password, i doubt this is a DDOS. Sounds more like the server just can not handle the load.

For those facing a DoS or DoSS attack, they shoult try out the DOS-Deflate application, its free and its a great solution for low range attacks. If the attacks are bigger you should now try with a hardware firewall such as Cisco ASA 5510 or if your site is a real bandwidth muncher, Cisco ASA 5520. Of course, these firewalls are expensive, but they stop DoS and DoSS in a jiffy!
