How to use user name and user id in templates

Hi!

My project is integrating an existing visual spoiler database (for the Warlord: Saga of the Storm CCG) into my vBulletin Board at www.cardmasters.de .

So far I have found out how to make a new page available to certain user groups and that works fine for now.

What I couldn't find so far, is

How to use the user name and/or user id in a template for this application.

Is there a decent beginner's tutorial for this kind of programming? I am not terribly skilled, but do have some experience with PHP and MySQL, but this extra layer confuses me and the documentation has not yielded what I was looking for.

Your help, hints and pointers are much appreciated.

Are you referring to the post above yours?

It gives me a few random conditions (and I'll try a few of the variables in there), but is there a comprehensive documentation on this? Of course unfortunately I do not speak what I think is Turkish...

From what I see PHP does not work in templates, so I need to rework my entire functionality including quite complex SQL statements and data base access.

Am I tackling this wrong? Is it easier to do it as a plug-in? Where do I find information that tells me how to start on that?

Sorry if these should be questions that are asked frequently - I looked for but didn't find any answers...

No i don't mean the response above mine, as that just links to another site (advertising??) that show a list of conditionals, and that is not what you asked.

I mean our Articles section on vB.org, just click on the Articles tab in the top of each page.
