Creating a sidebar

Note: I have searched for sidebar modifications and non fit my needs.

I am trying to create a sidebar which touches both the header and footer so an image can be placed there and they look connected. What would I need to do to make a style look like this?

You could probably modify the navbar template and footer to include a table for this.
