Upgrading - smooth transition

I think I already know the answer to this but I need some suggestions from some of you more knowledgeable vb'ers.

I am running 3.7.0 and am a stickler for keeping up to date. So, I want to stay on top of things but am a little leary of losing any mods or hacks I presently have. So I have installed a second version of vb (closed of course and not open to public).

It is my plan to keep up with the latest version on the private site and, try to duplicate all the mods/hacks I have over to the private site. Once I'm happy that the private site is running smooth, I plan on deleting the present site and renaming the newly installed version folder so that the transition will be smooth.

Am I going about this the wrong way?

Nope thats the best way to do it if you aren't comfortable with directly upgrading live boards to ensure you won't have any problems when you do decide to upgrade.
