I'm in over my head! Help appreciated!

I decided to go from Shared Hosting to VPS and only after the fact have realized I have no clue what I'm doing.

Does anyone know if there's a step-by-step guide for "dummies" on doing this?

I need information on setting up a MySQL via SSH and understanding exactly where to upload files to so they show up...
