Left side column (upgrade friendly)

Hello,

I need to add a (simple) left side column to my standart style. Something that makes not much trouble, when upgrading my vBulletin 3.73 in the future. Any idea? Tips? Thank you in advance!

I'm looking for the same, I don't really mind the upgrading, but a way to get a left bar in the forum layout in Vbulletin 3.7.x? There are methods for other versions, but for this version I can't find anything!
