That is a phrase. And the way you 'call' a phrase like that which needs input sent is by going:
<phrase 1="$bbuserinfo[username]">$vbphrase[welcome_x]</phrase>

So, you just need to pass $bbuserinfo[musername] instead of $bbuserinfo[username]. (and, if it's not available right there, you'll have to do something with a plugin.)
