I think this is a combination of different modifications and template changes. First, for the images, look up the modifications for category or forum icons, which replaces the standard category image with a different one per forum.

I've used the above since version 3.6 and it works fine.

Then, use the sub forum display mod to display the sub forums like that on the forum home page:

Then you'd somehow remove the last post and statistics columns from the forum home page, and have the forums arranged in columns. I know the last post and statistics mods exist, but can't find them, but you may have to use custom coding to arrange the forums in a square type shape.

the second mod as i understood is only working for sub-forums.. which i dont have in my own forum...

in addition the first mod is only for 3.6 series.. and i need for 3.7.3...
