Add Switches to the usercp to hide things?

Is it possible to add additional checkboxes to the usercp that can be selected to hide certain features of the site?

I have a chatbox that's using up a lot of resources. I want it hidden by default with a simple option for users to switch it on and off.

How would I accomplish this?
