Anyone else totally hate these?

I've just remembered something far worse than the leaving topics, and those are? Those darn 'site going downhill' topics! Those aggravating things it seems most established forums end up getting every three weeks complaining about how everything was better in the 'good old days' and such like! I remember sites like Web Hosting Talk, Sitepoint and vBulletin.org having quite a few of these topics for example...

Anyone agree those are annoying, drama attracting topics?

My policy on this sort of thing is simple...if people don't like the site, they should leave.

"Leaving threads" are generally deleted, unless they are genuine ones where the member has to leave for ill health or work committments or something. If it's a "flounce" leaving thread, it goes.

"Site going downhill" threads; it depends on the nature. I don't want to censor people's genuine issues, but on the other hand if all they want to do is insult us and harm the site, then they can go elsewhere.

If I don't like a site, I don't go there. Therefore if I've got people perpetually complaining about the site, eventually they will be banned. I figure that since they hate the place so much, they won't mind. But it's a last resort.

I don't know. I can see both sides, I guess.

To me, if I were to say, "The good old days" about vB.org, I would specifically be talking about back when I would check this site every day for new modifications to try out and have fun with. I haven't been that big of a poster, so discussion and topics were never a large part of my time here at .org. Modifications sort of died down drastically.. and my personal interest grew in other places of web development.. so "back in the day", I did have a lot more experience to learn and fun to have coming here.. I imagine that's what a handful of people share too.

But those "good old days" changed due to myself moving onto other areas, and really don't have anything to do with anybody else. I can only blame myself really, but I'm glad that I'm not that way anymore. :)

The sympathetic (emphasize on the 'pathetic') "I'm leaving" threads are, for a lack of better words, retarded. Members on my forum hate them, and they let it be known. There have only been a couple of people to do it though..

It's not so much their annoyingness alone, but how on various forums they end up:

1. Being really common and stating the same thing every time. I've seen big boards where the topics seem to spring up with the same stuff about once a week as a result, and they get old.

2. They make everyone think negatively, and it seems to put people in a constant complaining mood about everything and anything.

3. You often end up with leaving topics, people threatening to leave, drama and fighting as an aggravating side effect.

What's so annoying about it? generally, the thread starters in these cases are veteran members of boards and when they see a board take a turn for the worse they (or atleast I personally think) they are entitled to voice their opions and reminisce about the good ole days. What harm is it doing to you exactly?

It's all to easy for say "you" and me (generally speaking) a new member starting a thread complaining about members who create topics that reminisce about days gone past. Observing this thread, Your thread you created isn't so far off from the type of thread that chaps your ass.

So, yeah, I don't agree with you and yes I agree this is more of a drama queen topic than "the good ole days type thread"

I'd just delete them. The last one we had got locked by another admin, and I was like...pssh...who cares?

I just don't let them bother me, but I'm not going to let the conversation fester either. People want to complain that's fine, but spreading negativity is the danger. So I'll thank them for there opinion and just say, if you're not satisfied go elsewhere or even better make the site better yourself. Don't rely on others for your entertainment.

I mean, I don't with my own site, I do what I want because I want to have fun, I'm not going to be ruined by people leaving or someone complaining, pssh. I want to have fun and that's all it's there for.

I hate haters :P

i'm usually part of these threads... people tend to tell that i am worst than i was in the old days, that i coded well back in time, etc...

on vb.org or ipb.com, people are saying the same thing... even on my own products like postnuke, people tell for ages that it was better when i was in charge.. lol..

old days, where something was so easy it required 2 lines of code change instead of 50 ... and then the plugin technology... woot !!

been there, seen that, laughing at it now!
