change extentions of images

in the map buttons most of the buttons are .gif format. can we change extentions? would like to use .png, is this possible without making any edits in the php files?

Images will always be located inside the templates.

AdminCP > Styles & Templates > Style Manager > Edit Templates.

Maybe best to use the Search in Templates feature, to find which templates contain .gif and change it as appropriate.
