a better way to rate posts?

I was wondering how I would modify the post rating system to use something like at: http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/8497

I like how you interact with the rating so as to use less space / one less click.

I'm really not sure about this, but if it's possible just to set the rating code to work with a drop down other than radio buttons, I could possibly make said template edit.
