Paid Modification/Template Ethics

How do you feel about releasing work that you've done for someone else to the public?

Most of the time it's never discussed when doing jobs for people. Theres times when I feel that the community could greatly benefit from certain mods or styles that were done for paid requests; but is it fair to release something for free after someone has paid well to have it done?

How do you feel about these issues as either a developer or as a client?

i have 2 types of contracts: exclusives, non-exclusives... exclusives will never see the result release to public or sold... non-exclusive, the client have no control whatsoever on what i do with the result...

exclusive is always between 5 and 20 times the price of the non-exclusive, depending on the possibility to find new buyers for the script once completed.

as an example, right now i have a 8000$ job to code in the next 3 months... will never be released... would have been a 500$ job if i could sell it afterward, and i'm sure i would have tons of clients... but the guy want it to be really exclusive... :)

Bad Idea, they are 'PAID Jobs' I have paid some and if you want it pay please ;) don't trick us...

p.s. I do 'Non Disclosure Agreements'

The best way to not being tricked by a coder/designer is to make sure the rules are clear... my way may surprise some of my clients, but the first thing i provide when i evaluate the charges for a project is both the exclusive and non-exclusive prices... so the client know where he goes... :)

..so as a client, always make sure you have the same kind of deal... you loose nothing to ask!

btw Josh, a NDA is not protecting a client if the coder breaks the deal... because the NDA is just about correct people!

I understand...
But instead the of requesting the release of private work you got 2 better options Bellardia...
1. Learn to code
2. Suggest/Wait for another Coder to solve the same problem with a Hack.

p.s. #3 is pay... and of course #4= you asking for the code :p

You must have perceived my question wrong.
I am both a coder and a designer, and am in no way requesting anything. I'm simply trying to see what the standards are around here before I go releasing things for free that people paid me for.

Since it seems that nothing was agreed before hand I would just shoot them an email/msg and ask them if it's ok to post it. Give them a pretty decent amount of time to respond. That way you don't burn any bridges.

^Exactly, word of mouth is the best way to build up a client list. And burning bridges never helps that. I would suggest asking the person, and in any future endeavors make sure rules are set before you ever begin the work.
