How do get a drop down menu for notifications when a poster has friend request,private messages,and visitor comments?

It's inherent in vBulletin 3.7. What version are you running?

As said, the drop-down is default functionality in vBulletin 3.7. It only appears if you actually have a notification, however.

im using 3.7 but some how it does not work when i have a new pm or friend request

To troubleshoot this, please create a new Style with no Parent set. Now browse the forum using this new style, do you still have the same problems? If you are troubleshooting login or guest issues, you will need to set this style as board default in the vBulletin Options.
