Noob questions - coder cost, vB.org, and other questions

Stauts
  • If my project/forum is a 'go' it will be using vBulletin
  • Trying to figure out the major parts of putting up a forum - site hosting, vBullletin basics before buying to be sure desired goals are feasible. Based on reading this section of vBulletin.org my goals are quite simple.
  • I really don't want to set things up myself. I know the cost of the license is, phone support, and for vBulletin.com to install it but there seems to be some missing parts such as backup, restore, adding approved modifications, stuff like that.

The forum might make a few $ but not much so I don't have bucket loads of $ to put into this project (it at least needs to pay for itself).

1 - How can I get a clue if this project is feasible?
If the project is cost prohibitive then it would be good to know that now before I buy vBulletin in the first place.

Somewhere "Paid Requests section" was referenced in a thread. In the help section of this site it lists a "Premium Modifications" section, are they the same?

2 - Are there threads there that would be visible if I purchased a license? Right now there are no threads in there from my computer.

I'm really really stuck. I know talented people should be paid well, but some of this stuff might take a pro 1-2 hours which would be great. Doing it myself it could take months and might still get it wrong.

3 - I keep seeing references to "BB"code, is that Bulletin Board code? Different from php?

License+Hosting+Domain and some sweat and you will in the other side...
If you see it as a biz, then you have to be patient but yes you will recover, if you want to create a community on something that you love, then you don't have to worry...

I can install for free just for you to stop worrying ;)

Thank you for your kind offer. Because of that offer and other helpful input from the .com site I want to purchase vBulletin. However I am having technical difficulties because is is a UK purchase and I'm in the usa. Don't want to start a discussion about it, just letting you know what is happening.

paypal will solve it... and even they have a 1-800 customer number when they track your order... Welcome to the 'Family' ;)

1. Purchasing vbulletin for your forum is defiantly something you don't regret. For domain names, that is cheap - $10 a year. Hosting depends how big you are costs varies. Since you are new, you can get shared hosting. It can be as cheap as $5 at some places.

2. If you purchased a license, you will be able to download all the mods and styles and such with no problem. Nothing is really limited besides that. As for doing it yourself is not hard at all. If you know basics, it won't take you too long at all. Plus it isn't hard to learn and mostly everything doesn't need to be coded. The mods are simple addons and simple editing of the codes. Nothing too hard unless you are coding a mod by yourself.

3. BB code is coding like html, but used on forums. Such as for bolding in html is:

Code:

<b></b>
as for in bb code it is this:

Code:

[b][/b]
Hope I was an assistance!

That worked!

2 seconds later I got an email with customer number and password. I need to submit forum name or url to download it though and I'm working on that.

Do I need to submit the customer number and password to this site? Do the .com & .org sites share that information? Help?

EDIT - read some info on this site and it says to wait an hour.

The update can take up to an hour. As of this post, you are still showing as unlicensed. Also, when you edit your priority support (http://members.vbulletin.com/membersupport_priority.php) you must check off vBulletin.org in the Site Permissions box. This will allow vBulletin.org to access your information and verify your account. This will give you full permissions on this forum (normal users).
