About testvb "license"

About the testvb second test license that a license holder is allowed to use for testing purposes:

The license agreement says the folder must be password protected.

Does this means that simply restricting access to the /testvb folder to "192.168.*.*" isnt enought? Or is it OK to use anything other than a password, as long as it restricts so not the general public can use it?

If you have a valid Software license, you may set up an additional test forum in order to test code, template and database modifications. To make this clear to us and our license verification procedures, place it in a directory called 'testvb' and be sure to password protect it. It must not be accessible by the general public.
Please note, that I does not own a license, i just asks about the license agreement.

I doubt vBulletin will be that fussy as long as it not accessible to the general public it should be OK. You'd be better off asking at the vBulletin.com site for an official response from the vBulletin team.

htaccess would be a good idea

This is a question more suited for vBulletin.com. vBulletin.org specialises with the modification of vBulletin.

If you have cPanel, then you're best password protecting directories from within there.

Marco van Herwaarden 06-08-2008 06:11 PM

The license agreement clearly specifies that it must be password protected.

I just close the forum and say it's a test site that will never be public and they're okay with it. :)

Not sure who told you that, but the site must be password protected, closing the forum is not enough.

I'm coming in a little late on this thread, but since I've just set up a test board myself I thought I'd put in my 2 cents worth.

If you have cPanel, password protection is very easy to set. Apart from it being "in the rules" it's actually quite a good idea since you don't have to keep the board permanently closed, and you'd be able to create yourself a regular users account in addition to your admin account. This gives the opportunity to check everything from a users perspective - permissions especially, before transfering to a live board. If the board is simply offline you can only log in as an administrator, and there are some occasions when this may be a disadvantage.

The licence agreement states that a test board must be password protected, and must not be available to the public. It does not state that it must be permanently set as offline.

i would also recommend you copy your live forum to make your test forum. this gives you users/posts everything setting wise set exact. mods/skins exact.

this may help for errors that happen when xx mod is installed with xxxx mod. but both work fine alone..
