3.7: What is the difference between a "Contact" and a "Friend"?

I was wondering what the difference between a "Contact" and a "Friend" was in the 3.7 version? I see that you have the option to add someone as either/or...so what is the difference?

Also is there a way to lets say add a profile field that is only viewable by your "Contacts" but not your friends?
