u can give feedback or suggestion to competition which like does to captivate attention of guest that they join and many post ?
possibly like present given.
for the 1st winner and 2nd winner or 3rd winner,

gifts are good ideas. Some sort of free thing. Everyone likes free things.

My forums are offering up 1 free set of hockey gear once we hit 1000 active members

is the influence enough for your site? for example which many posting and active user?

it depends on the community. For some it is. with my forums, we're talkign about a $1500 set of gear. The existing members want this prize already so they go out and actively recruit new members.

I've even added more contests right now. with restrictions saying they must be active member to participate. It has helped a bit

you just need to make sure that there's enough traffic and people grabbing the traffic.
