It has...all the time.

Go to your Usergroups, then edit the Admin and Moderator groups... go to the Username HTML Markup field and click the help button... it will guide you as how to configure usergroup colors (admin and mod in your case) ...it changes their screen name color in posts, on the useronline list....everywhere as a matter. I have it on my board as well enabled.

What if you have multiple forum templates (dark and one light)?

Is there something available to apply it per template, instead of forum wide?

I too search for a solution that allows me to set multiple styles of username colors for differently styled skins. We have four dark skins and one light skin, and while the colors are nice on the dark skins, they are hellish on the light one.

I don't believe vBulletin has the ability to support multiple styles without a hack.

What about adding a new class - .newclass - in your css and then using:
<span class="newclass"></span>

(I've never tried it, but think it should work.)
