How to display many subforums

I have some subforums now. Only a few per forum max, so display has never been an issue.

However, we're going to add many subforums for one forum and we want to keep the forum home very neat.

How do most sites go about having a custom setup, is there a mod, or do they just write some static code?

I believe there is a modification that makes the subforums appear in neat columns, I believe that is the best way.
