Announcements on Forum Index

I've been trying to find a way to display the $announcebits on the forum index, below the navigation bar. I've seen a few mods that allow custom announcements to be posted there, but nothing that integrates with the existing announcement system.

Anyone got some advice or help here?

Again, I'm looking for something that ties in with the existing announcement system. Not something that creates its own additional announcement.
