Can I see who is lurking while logged off?

When a user logs off but continues to browse the forum, is there any way to detect/show that that user (via cookie) or IP address is still lurking around? Is there a hack for this? Just wondering. Thanks.

P.s.: Man, there are some AWFUL thread titles in this forum. How do people expect anyone to read those threads? /rant

When they are logged off their cookie is gone. Without that you are not going to get any info. I'm sure somoen could come up woith something that would match the IPs of known users but then you run into the rpoblrem is they are on dial-up and have different IPs all the time. No 100% way of doing it, I'm afraid.

And if they are lurking it would show them as a Guest so you still see what they are doing.

There's definitely a mod for this, I'll try and dig it up. I have it running on my site.

I wholeheartedly agree. :(

I'd be interested in looking at that mod when you find it. I'd like to see how they did it.

Ugh, I can't seem to find it. Man it sucks getting old and senile. :( I have to run out right now as well (valentine's day). The only thing remotely resembling it in my ACP is Paul M's "Track Guests Visits" but I don't think that's it.

I'll chime in later if you can't find it first. I have to head out right now for valentine's day, otherwise you'll have a mod, and I'll be sleeping on the couch. :D

At least you still have a couch left. She got that, too. :(

Thanks for the help guys. I did just install AE's uhh... "see who uses multiple logins using a different cookie than VB" mod. Can't remember what it's called. Anyway, it is supposed to leave a cookie that's not cleared by logging out. This almost does what I want, but only if the person logs in again under a different account. I just want to see when someone logs out but continues to lurk from the same computer. It can't be too far off from this mod.

Aha, found it: https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=125871

Also, while I have some attention, I'm looking for a way to display various types of ads/things on specific threads I select. Is that just done with a template IF statement? IF so, does that clutter things up or slow down execution much? Let's say I have a couple threads that get a lot of views but mostly from lurkers/guests/likely to bounce search engine traffic. I want to put Google ads along the side and/or top/bottom/whatever. Do I just put "if blah blah = showthread?t=22342" type of statement into the showthread template? Or is there a more elegant way to do this, maybe with a ACP control panel for it all, so I don't have to go digging thru templates each time?

Thanks again.

It sounds like you just want to disable Guest viewing. I don't think you actually need a mod for that, but this one has lots of options:

Not exactly - I want to have Guest viewing but be able to see if a specific guest is a member via an IP check or something. Bumping this for any help. Thanks.

I can see all my guest's IP numbers, so I could look them up manually I guess. If I really cared. I dunno if this is a mod that shows me those or not.

I doubt you could do this automatically without tons of server load because there's so many guests connecting all the time (mine says 554 one day 3 weeks ago).

Is there some reason I should care? It's to their advantage to log in, so why wouldn't they if they could?
