Search button would find you multiple ways to protect against them.

Search button in the Mods forums will give you a list of spam related hacks, but a search in this forum will give you tons of threads about spam and which hacks people seem to really like and use.

I use NoSpam!, works perfectly.

I use this one here and this one here together, along with verify email and unless it is an actual human spammer i just don't get none no more

Does anybody else require custom profile fields to be completed on registration?

We require email confirmation and stock vB captcha, plus several custom profile fields. Within the last couple of months, we've had increasing amounts of spam traffic, most of it from actual humans, though. I don't get the impression that it's coming from bots, simply because we started requiring moderator approval on new accounts, and the spammers subsequently got better at completing their profiles on registration.

Of course, as soon as I say this, we're going to turn up with a huge bot problem. But I'm curious what role the custom profile fields play in discouraging lazy bot programmers.

Same here, in fact the only type of spam I get is related to the niche of my forum and it is definitely manual spamming. Due to this I always blacklist (censor) the websites of the spammers to ensure they can’t get any business from my forum, kind of harsh but an effective way of punishing the offending parties.
