what size header do i need
 
i want to make a new header for my site . but what size do i need to make it. i am new to photoshop. please let me know.. thanks..

There is no real set limit, it more or less taking your users into account based on desktop settings, so there is no scrolling left to right in their browser, desktop settings have a large range now a days.

Typically i make no logo more that 250 to 300 in height & no more than 400 to 600 in width and then use a filler back ground image to fill in the rest of the space, all that is based on a 100% span, that way the filler image will span across any browser window regardless of desktop size.

ok now did i do this the right way. i just upload a .gif over the vbulletin3_logo_white.gif that was there. or do i need to do this a different way..

For an open source community this seems to be the one type of topic that is taboo. The information on how to custom skin your own forum seems to be hush hush. There has to be information on how to do what is required to skin your own forum somewhere.... Like where to upload colors or textures etc...

I sure can't find it!
