There is a script for wp to automatically translate 10 or 13 digit ISNB numbers into amazon links with associate ID...

Can this be done for vbulletin, does it exist or can someone write it?

It can be done. But it doesn't exist.

Yes, a BB code would be much easier. And it would work much better IMO as well.

In the Admin CP, there is a section for BB Codes, create a new one. It is fully commented, so it should be pretty easy.
