I desperately want to install the php portal hack, but am still too chicken.

I have installed the download private message hack, and the showmods hack with no problems. I have also done a little template customization.

What other hacks are good for beginners (for 2.0 boards)

p.s. has anyone found an easy way to get a side menu on 2.0 without template editing? The wrapper table doesn't work with many templates because the templates end the content table in the middle. Bad Jelsoft! Bad, Bad Jelsoft!

See that huge round table around my forum? (click a link in my sig) You just need to remove that opening tags/close tags from the few templates that they are in, i.e. showthread.
