Last Visit?

How is your "last visit" calculated? I'm asking because I've recently changed my forum read marking type to "Database (no automatic forum marking)", and I have the New posts and reputation comments mod installed. However now that I enabled the database option, it tells me I have way too many new posts since my last visit and only goes back to zero if I log out and back in. I don't know how to fix this.

The last visit dateline is stored in the user table.
