Unprecedented vBulletin plug-in (desktop notifications)
Hi everyone,
Check this out: http://www.orionapps.com/forumnotifier Here are some screenshots: http://www.orionapps.com/forumnotifier-screenshots Looks impressive. Did anyone try it? |
I have not tried it yet but without more information on the product I would be not inclined to do so. For example, the Windows client has to somehow pass the user's credentials to the vBulletin installation -- Are those credentials being transmitted over HTTP encrypted somehow or as plain-text? What are the requirements on the vBulletin side? What versions are supported? What kind of additional queries are being done? Is the source code viewable? Heck, for that part... is it even logging into vBulletin at all or is it just screen scraping the forums that guests can normally view?
Just too many questions before I'd even consider testing something like that. |
Hi,
I emailed them about the encyption thing and the supported versions. They said that the program doesn't ask to provide admin username/password or any other login details, so there's no need for encryption here, and all versions are supported. |
I fail to see what's impressive about it, just a simple notification from polling the forum as far as i can see. Certainly not worth $39.
|
I do not see desktop notifications for:
- PM - Friends online - Subscriptions Actually, this seems like software that works for the admin only, but is not available for forum members. This could have been a great step forward, but so far it's too basic. |
