Slow load time for arcade

I've searched this question before and none of the other threads seem to have a definitive answer.

My site (including the arcade) had a great loading speed considering the size of the pages. My host is one and one. Never had any problems before.

Recently, the arcade slowed to almost a crawl. Here are the stats from microstats (which I installed after the fact just to check the load, etc.) :

Page generated in 10.59856200 seconds  (89.20% PHP - 10.80% MySQL) with 5 queries
Users: 1 (1 members and 0 guests) | 6,416.77KB Used | GZIP ON (level 1) | Uncached Templates: None

This is compared to any page except the arcade which loads with these stats:

Page generated in 1.31314111 seconds :) (-24.50% PHP - 124.50% MySQL) with 17 queries
Users: 1 (1 members and 0 guests) | 4,035.48KB Used | GZIP ON (level 1) | Uncached Templates: None

I am running vbulletin 3.6.6, upgraded 3 days ago from 3.6.0 just to try to solve this problem. I also did an uninstall and clean reinstall of the arcade system. It is almost as if code in this one page is somehow lagging the system, although it never has before.

I know others have experienced this and it doesn't make sense to just start out of nowhere. Do you think that hosts have flagged the filename arcade.php as a resource hog and started throttling the bandwidth on it? Or am I just being way too paranoid.

Click here to go to my main page and then try going to the arcade and compare the load times for yourselves. Use login : gomer, password : pyle to access the arcade.

just as info: before I uninstalled the arcade, I had over 300 games, displaying 24 per page, it it was super fast. Now I have about half that amount and display only 8 per page. I did that in hopes of seeing an improvement. No luck. Ready to do some serious brainstorming.

Also, as additional info: I have tried repairing and optimizing the DB tables under phpmyadmin and under the admin CP in vbulletin. Didn't change things though.

Just FYI: Oneandone tech support checked it and said that the script needs to be optimized to reduce the load time. My tech guy was nice enough, but from India, and seemed to just be using a flow chart or something to troubleshoot. I really don't think that could be it, or it never would have been fast like it once was. Are there any known issues with combinations of arcade related hacks, like new post on highscore, randomgames on main page, etc?

Let's try this a different way. I would like to experiment to see if a code change in the versions is causing this. I originally had the older IBproarcade release installed. Does anyone have a copy of an earlier version "Arcade.php" file that I could upload and see if the language makes a difference?

Something has caused a slowdown, and its only the arcade.php page, so trial and error seems the best bet. I guess I could experiment with removing lines of code here and there but would prefer running an old page and comparing the difference (if any)

I have all previous releases here :)

I can only find 2.6.5+ version now. Other versions here at vbulletin.org now gone.

Could you post a few previous versions of arcade.php here for me to test ... or if not, then perhaps email? Just the arcade.php page since this seems to be the only one I am having problems with. Thanks Mr. Zeropage! :D

Thanks for your help. I was unable to find any difference in time using the different versions. I suspect the change must have been at my host. I use 1 and 1 hosting (shared) and have never had a problem before now. I have noticed my server load numbers creeping upward. (usually at about 1.8 to 2.4) so I know they are loading down the servers. I guess there are just too mnay database requests or SQL queries in cue that is slowing the whole thing down.

It still seems that the arcade is the slowest though. What is an average number of SQL requests for the arcade page? About 10 or so?

MrZeropage 01-15-2008 06:10 PM

in shared webspace environment there is always a chance that other customers sites slow down all other sites...

I guess that is it.

At first I was convinced that the problem was in the script, since the generation time for arcade.php compared to any other page on my site is 15 times as long, but I think now that oneandone.com must have a seperate server just for the SQL databases and that the machine which stores my database is being overworked by other cleints.

That would explain the slow load time for a page with many SQL queries.

UPDATE!

The problem has been fixed! Although I had to take extreme measures to fix it, and I still don't know what caused it. It was a database problem, but not the normal kind of corruption or bad tables.

I noticed that while the phpmyadmin control panel showed a database size of 24 MB, the actual size when I expanded the table structure was 12 MB.

So I dumped the database, and then created another blank database and imported the contents. I changed the config.php info in the vbulletin includes folder to reflect the new database name and server and VIOLA! It was back to normal!

Now the arcade is fast again, loads in about 1 second with 286 games listed. Its incredible. The only thing I can figure is that I must have manually screwed up something. It is as if it was logging everything twice in the database somehow.

Anyway, the important thing is it wasn't any conflict with this mod and others (as far as I can tell) It was simply an anomoly that slowed everything without causing errors. Strange indeed!

Thanks for that information :)
