Spam Magnet

I have one sub-forum that seems to be acting as a Spam Magnet. Its not even a particularly active sub-forum. For whatever reason, any span that comes in tends to go there. I guess I'm not complaining too much, it makes it a bit easier to keep the forums cleaned up, but I can't figure out why all of the spam is going there and just there. If I could cut out on the spam going to that sub-forum, I'd probably cut out 99% of my spam, at least until they figure something else out.

Most of my spam went away when I converted the registration to require an e-mail confirmation. The only things that slip by this seem to be finding their way to this one sub-forum. Any thoughts?

Bots might be finding the sub-forum due to its title. Try renaming the sub-forum to something else.

Yeah like calorie stated it may be due to the Forum Title. Also, logically, if its the lowest ForumID that is open to posting that may be why too.

In this particular area, sub-forums are set up for each community in our area. So the forum is named after the community. Renaming it would basically take it out of convention with the rest so I don't think that is a good idea. In terms of its ID number, it is pretty much in the middle.

Any idea on why the name "Pleasant Lake" would attract so many bots.

Oh well, the actual amount of posted spam on our site is pretty low compared to the number of bot generated accounts that I have to clean out every couple of weeks. I guess it could be worse.

Thanks

There are a few anti-spam hacks available here that you could try...

The time between the post and you deleting it is very important in getting rid of spam. If you delete all spam immediately, then spam bots tend to go elsewhere. At least, that is my experience.

Install the "nospam" mod, it works great...
