vb.org Archive - The right path?

I have started to pick up my php books once again at an attempt to freshen up what I already know and too start learning what I don't. What I would specifically like to know if the books I'm reading are worth it. Right now I am currently reading;

Build Your Own Database Driven Website Using PHP & MySQL (3rd edition)
PHP Solutions - Dynamic Web Design Made Easy

If your a programming guru, please have a look at these two books and let me know if they are the right ones to begin programming. Once I am proficient enough to make solid programs I would like to start working on vbulletin mods.
