Ban all non-north america IP's ??
I am having problems with foreign accounts spamming my board. Is there a list of non-North American IP's that I could use to place in the banned IP's list??
Other suggestions? Johnnie |
I asked a similar question a while back on vb.com and got this response.

How about:-
These 2 steps were employed on a board I am co-admin of some 18 months ago after a series of spam-bot attacks. We have not any posts since, though the bots do try. Expand that into:-
Shove new registrations into the mod queue and actually do some Googling for email addresses and user names, plus looking at IP addresses being used. This can help point to a flaw in your registration process, and assist in finding a modification to plug the gap. No problem is impossible to overcome. Patience and perseverence is paramount. ;) |
TW, I have no guest posting, image verification required for registration. I continue to get three or four (not many I realize) porn posts each week. Each of these posted by new members with Foreign IPs. They are registering, correctly verifying the image, confirming registration throught the confirmation email and then posting. I have a new, small, board and this crap will ruin it. My board is centered around a topic for the US only.

Under those circumstances I would put a halt on automated acceptance of registration. Put them through the moderation queue for a while. If they are human registrations and not robotic they will stop trying after they realize they are not getting their jollies.

Wish I could, but my board is a start up and I don't want to turn anyone away due to them having to wait to post. Thanks, I guess I'll just have to keep a keen eye on the board.
