Email members of usergroup for new posts

Is it possible to set something up where new threads in a specific forum, for instance a "news" forum, trigger an email to be sent to the members of a specific usergroup when those threads are created? Does this require a mod?

Yes, this requires a plugin. Do a search on 'vbmail' function and use it in 'newpost_complete', 'newreply_post_complete', 'newthread_post_complete' hooks. You also will need to get the users who are in the usergroup that will be notified.
