i would like to have a hack for latest topics on my front page.

Why don't you ask in phpportal forum how he did that.

I think I saw a post in his forum with the code for his active topics. Just search for it.

it is phpPortal.. it is a hack to intergrate VB.. I use it on some of my sites... go to .. http://www.phpportals.com and go to the resource directory.. then find where you can download it.

No you don't have to pay to download it, you just have to pay for support. You must register to download it. There are a number of hacks here that also contain the code for the latest threads.
