Why is Javascript is creating Huge Lag Issues?
My forum has reply, PM and thread posting fields that have such a bad lag to them that I have to turn javascript off just so its not too annoying to even bother posting.
Some members have mentioned it and that it comes and goes for them but for myself and another Mac/Firefox user that I know its a horrible lag where you have to sit and wait for your words to catch up to your typing. When I turn off javascript or switch to Opera there is no more lag. It does not happen in other forums I go to except for my other vb forum I have on the same server. One is running 3.5.4 and the other 3.6.8. The 3.6.8 forum only has 3-4 hacks. |
If you disable your mods and switch back to the default style, does it still have this problem?

When plugins are disabled it still happens. I forgot to test that before but no-still lagged.
I took Firefox and stripped it down too just in case it was a skin or add-on and it still happens. Only when I disable javascript does it not lag. One thing I did find was it happens in Sea Monkey and the Mozilla browser but not in Camino which is the native Mac browser. Original White skin has the same lag as well. |
You have the code to vbulletin's md5 javascript added to your template twice, though I don't suppose that would make much difference.
You don't have gzipping enabled which certainly will make a difference, although I'm not sure if the built-in gzip function deals with external javascript files, I suspect it doesn't. This is well worth reading: http://developer.yahoo.com/performance/rules.html and is accompanied by a Firefox plugin called Yslow which is very good, although both do require that you know what you're doing to some extent. |
I think he's saying that while typing, Javascript is doing something, making the letters appear slowly in the textarea.

I was sure it was the state of the forum I had which was my first and had a slew of hacks installed and uninstalled and lots of different skins but then I opened the 3.6.8 forum just recently and its the same shit. Mind numbingly frustrating. Thanks for this link--its pretty helpful regardless... http://developer.yahoo.com/performance/rules.html |
Might it be your browser? I don't have this problem with any vB based forums I visit. Share or PM your URL with a test account and I'll see if I have the same problem.

Are you on a mac? Is anyone on a mac that can test it because I have only found problems with mac users like myself and only in the Mozilla line of browsers. |
If you want people to test it out, you should provide a test account with username/password.
