What version of MySQL should I have?

I currentley have MySQL 4.1.22 standard . Should I leave that version or ask my hosting company to update it to the newest version?

I play to use my hosting only for VBulletin and want to try some VBulletin mods.

What are the system requirements for vBulletin?

Minimum Requirements: vBulletin is designed to run on every server that has PHP 4.3.3 or greater and MySQL 4.0.16 or greater installed.

It is recommended to use PHP 4.4.2 or 5.1.2, or later and MySQL 5.0.19 or later.

The software has been successfully installed on several different flavours of UNIX, as well as Windows™ 98/NT/2000/XP, and the Mac

Note: We recommend you contact your hosting provider to verify that they have the correct versions of PHP and MySQL installed. If you administrate your own server, PHP and MySQL are available for free download from php.net and mysql.com.

It should be fine for now, although it would be better to upgrade it if possible. I don't any reason for making it an urgent priority though.

Thanks.

I don't have experience with MySQL nor VBulletin, so I'm really not sure what to do. Should I update MySQL right now, before setting up VBulletin on the server....

as MySQL have no interaction with vBulletin, you can do the upgrade when you want...

if you are not set with your server OR if you did not choose your host yet, i would suggest you go where the MySQL is updated more often, so you are sure to be debugged if problems occur.

My hosting is at HostGator .

And they say....

MySQL 5.0.24 is available upon request for shared accounts only.

So my question is should I update before setting up VBulletin, or update after VBulletin if I experience any problems.?

You will not experience any problems running 4.1.22, so it's personal choice really.

And no difference in "speed" ?

As you are on Hostgator, i can answer this... you will never have MySQL or PHP problems with HostGator, for one reason: they run the server to be able to drive vBulletin in the best situations possible... you can even see why here: http://forums.hostgator.com/ our community forum is on vBulletin.. ;)

Oh, ok then. I've heard so many good things about HG hosting VBulletin forums ,so I guess everything is gonna be OK.

Thanks again!
