Only spammers registering, Anyone else with forums like this?

I have built my forum and have been building content and gradually getting more and more traffic, the only problem is with more and more traffic, all I get is more and more spammers, there isn't a single good member who has signed up. Most of the spammers are from Nigeria as well.

Does anyone else have this problem? Is there anyway to start getting real members instead of spammers? Need advice from people with experience.

Thanks
Best Regards

Are these spammers real people, or automated bots?

I'm not sure, to me it seems like real people but I don't know how to tell the difference. We got a bunch of different people signing up from nigeria advertising some nokia tvs and crap. I don't know if these are bots or poor people. Then we have this one guy that signs up under different user names, but he makes posts in relevant areas but it's all duplicated articles from different sites. The we just have a bunch of people who come over and make a spammy 1 sentence post and never come back. I assume these are real people because I have the image verification thing going, but I'm frustrated because I'm looking for real members, and all i get is spammers.

If they are coming from the same IP, ban the IP.

We get a ton of spammers on our site, so we make sure all first posts are moderated. There are a ton of different mods here that will deal with spammers.

I had the same problem banning the ip doesn't help, banning the username doesn't help.
I finally found a solution that works for me,

If you forum is about a topic that the real members that join your forum should know something about , then thier is a hack that lets you put a question in that the new registrations must answer, correctly.

This will stop the bots,

So if your forum is about lets say horses,

I would have the following question, you need to keep it simple, but effective.

what is the height of a horse measured in?

answer = hands

Be supprised how that will stop the robut and most of the spammers.

The hack is called spam stop I think

Hope this helps

Above script works great, and reduce the bot joins for like 90%.
