How would I remove
 
the join date in the post bits under the persons avatar?

And the 'thank you' info (that comes with the thank you hack) in the same area? Kinda makes for a wide post.

open up the postbit template find:

Code:
<if condition="$post['joindate']"><div>$vbphrase[join_date]: $post[joindate]</div></if>
delete then save template.

Sorry no idea about the thanks thing

maybe ask in the hack thread after making sure it hasn't been asked 20 times before - probably a long one to wade through but you'd be surprised what you'll learn along the way
