using a different user database?

I was wondering if it's possible to integrate vBulletin to the extent of using a pre-existing non vBulletin user database for login/signup ??

I'd like to seamlessly integrate this product so it allows all my current username/passwords to access the forums without having to re-register. Is this possible?? How difficult??
