Permissions based on profile field

Looking for a mod that can give certain permissions based on what a user chooses during registration.

For example, a new user can select a Year of Study, primarily Freshman, Sophomore, etc. And based on this, they will be given access to certain forums.

Does a mod like this exist? Would this be hard to create?
