17 year old unlocks iPhone! No more At&t!

Well, I was up at our community store eating and rarely do I ever read the paper while I eat. But today, the paper was just laying out on the table and something caught my eye. I saw iPhone and Hacked in the same sentence. :)

What does this mean? Well, you can unlock your iphone and use T-Mobile now. Actually you could use any provider, but T-mobile is the only other carrier that supports the technology in the iphone. Woot Woot! This guy sold the hacked phone on eBay for over $3,000.00 usd. Then he got a Car and 3 free iphones (stated in his blog).

Saw that in the news the other day. I always wonder what type of person buys a piece of equipment that costs several hundred dollars and then immediately voids the warranty by soldering on it.

The same type of person that can read japanese and likes to import his video games or run homebrew software. ;)

Some people just like to tinker. :)

Before I got into web development I was chipping xbox's and playstation 2's. I had people sending me their consoles from all around the country. I was probably 16 at the time. Now, the people that are doing this are getting FBI searches. I read about this not to long ago. Kind of scary.

yes, I expect the response from Apple or AT&T to be no less than some DMCA crap.

It's not illegal to unlock a mobile phone or device in the USA. The laws which apply to chipping or modding of consoles/machines does not apply to handsets. Look it up. :)

Why put a chip in an xbox? I've always found it easier to "hotswap" the HDD and never had an issue with it. :) Or are you talking about the 360 (which I've never modified).

I still do work like this for the locals but I'd never turn it into an online business. These days I mostly work on PSPs though....custom/hacked firmware is great.

The kid sold the phone to some company that gave him a new sports car and three more iPhones. I guess it worked out for him.

Here it is. He got a 350Z and 3 8GB iPhones

Good for him, proof ingenuity and creative thinking is still alive and well in this country.

Personally the AT&T 8525 is far superior, best phone I have ever owned.
