User requesting to be in a usergroup

ok my forums promotes team competitions, we have 4 teams. These 4 teams are currently user ranks, this is because each team has a logo and therefore i want to use user ranks so the logo is dispalyed in there post bit.

The person userrank is based on the usergroup i put them in

The problem is each time someone wants to join a team or change teams i have to change their usergroup manually.

Is it possible for a member to automatically select there own usegroup or userank?

Or if not send a request to be added to a certain usergroup, that will autmomaticallt add them if an admin agrees.

Make the usergroups for each team publicly joinable. Then, members can just join by going to a page in their controls and clicking a relevant link.

thanks i only want them to be able to join one of the four teams though and also not be able to leave it once selected, how would i do this?

When you have created the user group, there was a "Public (Joinable) group" Option. I'm not sure if the option is there for old user groups... I'm going to go check now.

EDIT:

Click on "Edit Usergroup X (id: Y)" from the drop down next to it (under neath the Custom Groups), and there will be a "Public (Joinable) Group Option" in the second category.

Yes this is kinda what i am going for, but is it possible to make it so they can only join one of the 4 groups and not as many of the 4 as they want.

I believe there is an approval option. Meaning you only approve the ones you want to allow to join.

i understand thias may be diggin up an old thread and all but can someone please advise me where this "approval option" is

I know how to reach the actual approval page but how do i set a usergroup to require approval?

i onyl seem to be able to set it to

public - anyone can join doesnt require approval

or

not public - no one can join as its not viewable

i want to have a usergroup which people can request to be part of but that requires approval after some vetting.

plz hlp

Yes, you need to change

Public (Joinable) Custom Usergroups to Yes.

Then save the usergroup settings. Then look for the option to add a group leader and assign a group leader, then anyone that tries to join will require the group leader(s) approval before joining.
