Getting started

OK. I already purchased my domain names from Go Daddy, vBulletin, about ready to choose a host, and before I set up vBulletin I had these questions:

* If I have a specific site design and vision of how my site should work how should I proceed? Should I install VBulletin and then try and find people on this site to help me with the site design and the specific mods I might need to make my site flow the way I want?Could I upload a diagram of how I envision the site to look?

* The biggest question is can I set up vBulletin and then tweak my site as I move forward?

I hope these questions don't seem too dumb? I just want to get moving.

Thanks in advance!!!

LOL, well you got the necessary stuff.

First off is install vBulletin, then find help to get your design and specific mods taken care of or you can reverse as many of us coders/designers have a test vb that we build on. Diagram's always help people out when deciding how to go about things.

Yes, there is always room for a vBulletin site to be tweaked.

I believe no question is dumb as many people have questions that need answering.

Cheers
Steve

Now that there are products and plugins adding and changing features is very easy. I would suggest you install your forum and setup all of the basics (change the settings to your liking, add forums, ranks, titles, usergroups, rules, smilies, avatars...). Then get to know your way around the controls.

Once you are more familiar with how things work you can begin to change the templates and other features to make it more the way you want. Many people download a free style and customize it for thier boards before trying to create their own. Feel free to stop in and ask any questions you might have a long the way...

The only dumb question is the one not asked... ;)

Hope that helps. :D

LOL, I have never seen anyone so excited since I've been using vBulletin. Glad to see excitement still exists in this world.

HA!!! Already stuck before I got to upload to my host. I am reading the installation manual and I don't know where to find the info needed to change the config file before upload. Do I have to contact my host to get this info? One day this will be easier:)

I appreciate all the help so far!!!

As far as the database info, yes, your host will supply this info.

Not necessarily. If you have access to cPanel or its equivalent, then you simply need to create a mySQL Database and User and assign said User the necessary permissions -- that's the only information you'll need for config.php.

Make sure you read through the comments in the config.php file, it will help.

I PM'd him my phone number, we got that all situated. I just walked him through the setting up of a DB to the editing of config.php to uploading and running the install script so thats all settled. :)
