advise on shared vs. VPS?
I currently use Westhost as my hosting company. While they were good at first, now I am unhappy with them. They disabled my site because I was using like "30%" of the resources. They did send warnings out and I did respond and the guy on the phone said it was faulty s/w and reset my warning things. Two days later, they disabled my site. I got them to turn it back on so "I can research the matter".
Here are my specs: - vBulletin 3.6.7 - about 10 mods (like fav smilies and little things like that. I did disable the vBShout mod). - Members: 190 - Threads: 4,916 - Posts: 83,286 - about 15 to 20 members on at any given time - about 50 members visited in a single day - SQL DB size is about 50MB Current server loads: 241.54/8000 MB (disk space) 3707.4/153600 MB (bandwidth) You see, it isn't a big site at all, but Westhost is trying to get me to go to a dedicated server, which is over $100 a month. I had GoDaddy at first, which was absolutely horrible, now Westhost...both shared plans... Am I really torquing the servers that much? Or am I striking out with bad companies that over sell. Please, someone give me some advise on what I should do... and any reco's? I was looking at Knownhost.com for their VPS...not to expensive...(the $20/ month one). I am not looking to spend more than $25 a month anyways... but I am open to suggestions... |
I suggest moving to a VPS -- vBulletin can be server intensive for those websites that just suck. The host you have sounds like they oversell as well but also the fact that you have modifications can kill it as well -- they end up adding more sql quiries per page load.
If you are using vbShout on a shared hosting plan, or any shoutbox for that matter, I suggest you dump it if you plan on sticking with a shared hosting plan. |
I'd recommend http://www.servint.com @ $50 / month.
|
I recommend www.fluidhosting.com Less then 50 a month, and Superior Support ;)
|
I recommend www.ASmallOrange.com - Best in the industry
|
I recommend www.jaguarpc.com for all your vps needs.

www.bravenet.com $270 a year (with triple resources) and free domain name. unlimited MySQL databases.
90GB data limit 1.9 TB's bandwidth per month and access to essential PHP configuration settings. shared web hosting. or these guys, www.geekempire.com |
Bravenet? I would never go with them. Go with http://dreamhost.com over bravenet. I read so many horrible reviews about bravenet, but that would be hearsay until I experience it myself. I mostly read that service is good, but they shut you down for anything you do outside of the norm.
