Color Space in Skins

Browsing through all the beautiful skins here, and editing my own, has got me wondering if there is any worry about not solely using the 256 base colors for building skins. Everything I have read strongly suggests keeping colors to the base 256 but clearly very few if any of the really good looking skins do that.

Am I paranoid or correct to be concerned? Thoughts?

There's really no reason to restrict yourself; very few people will have a problem.
