Best ways too advertise your site?

I've seen Vbulletin sites with 500+ Members on it. Im trying to start out a gaming site, and I need ways to advertise. What are the best ways?

My suggestion is to begin by making sure your site has a lot of good content and reasons for people to come to and stay at that site. Word of mouth is the biggest advertisement you can possibly get. Other than that, there's paid posting, targeted traffic, etc.

Th Yahoo! Slurp Spiders have been running around crazy lately.

Enable your forums to have guest access, and once the spiders hit they will put you in their search results for related keyword searches.

The key is to have content on the site.

just like what was said, build solid content, then add your link in your sig here and other places for back links.

Thanks, what is some good solid content that you suggest for a game site?

game news, or game reviews ;)

Also, consider implementing a contest to your forum here and there. For instance: the first member to reach 1,000 posts will win themselves a game, or something. And runners up will receive a small cash reward, perhaps. I can't think of decent prizes just off the top of my head at the moment but I'll be offering a chance to win a free copy of Fable 2 for Xbox 360 on my Fable 2 website and I'm confident that it will help attract some attention.

... make something different... visit a LOT of gaming sites around, not only the ones related to the games you want to talk about... and see what was done. look at the forums where there is not much content, to see what was their error...
