From what I've seen, it's the items/ribbons part that can be exploited correct?

I really just want the vbux for the PMing feature when someone donates. And the vbplaza for the buyable usernames.

If I end up getting a copy somewhere, and just disable the items and ribbons, will this be fine?

You have to ask yourself if it is really worth it. You might be better paying someone to recode and fix the exploits or just waiting till the new version is released.
